Babbar Patera, with its diameter of over 300 kilometers, is one of the largest volcanoes of Io and in the Solar System. Although no plume has been detected over Babbar, both Voyager 1 and Galileo have seen it as a hot spot indicating that it is still active. This animation was rendered using a model of Babbar Patera which is experimental like the USGS map it is based on (Ji 15M 1R by Patricia M. Bridges). The model probably has errors but it still gives a good idea about the relief of the region. The model covers longitudes 280 to 260 degrees and latitudes -30 to -50 degrees. |
