relayed to Earth by the Viking spacecraft has greatly affected
man's perceptions and understanding of the planet Mars. The
increase in basic, directly confirmed knowledge of the Red Planet
began even before the landings. Once in orbit, the spacecraft
began transmitting the first of tens of thousands of images of the
planet and its satellites.
